Our Butterflies

During our topic 'Little Critters', Room 8 created some beautiful collages.
We know not all of you were able to visit our class to see them so we are sharing
them here on our blog. We really enjoyed using paper in this way to make colourful patterns on our butterfly wings.

Time to say goodbye to our little critters

Term 4 saw Room 8 learning a lot about the little critters around us. We were lucky enough to have some minibeasts living with us for a while so we could look at them up close and learn about how they live. But they cannot live with us forever and in the last week of school we set them free. Here is a short movie of when we relased a weta to return to it's home.

Christmas is a time to say thank you to those people who have an impact on your life. Room 8 have been very greatful to everyone who has read our blog and posted during the year. School begins again on the 7th of February, but we will be posting over the holidays.

There is only a few more weeks of school and that means it is getting closer to christmas! Room 8 are getting very excited and have been busy writing letters to santa. Because it is the age of technology, Room 8 have decided that we think there might be a chance that Santa reads our blog.

My Sister Raewen

My sister is 6 years old and her name is Raewen. Her hair is black and her eyes are chocolate brown. She has plaits.

My sister Raewen loves to play with me on the trampoline. She loves to play handstands. Then we jump on the trampoline together.

I feel happy when my sister tells me secrets. When my sister cuddles me I feel special. I feel happy when my sister lets me plays Wii games.

My Baby Sister

My baby sister has straight, soft hair. She is tiny.
She is skinny.

My baby sister is in the hospital because she is sick. My
baby sister makes me happy when she smiles. I like playing
with her. When she holds my hand she loves me.

I feel happy when she smiles back to me. I feel loved when
she holds my hand. I like playing with her.

Wash Your Hands

This week Room 8 had a visit from the Health Nurse who reminded us how important it is for us to wash and dry our hands so we don't spread germs and help stop the flu. Antonia and Maysun helped to demonstrate to Room 8 how you wash and dry your hands in the right way.



REMEMBER TO:
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds and dry them for 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand rub.

DJ teaches the class about Garage Band

As part of our literacy cycle Room 8 children publish their written work on the class blog so that it can be read and commented on by an audience. This publishing can be done in many different ways, for example typing the story and creating a movie of the story. This week DJ has been learning how she can publish and reflect on her stories by using the programme GarageBand.

DJ has been teaching the rest of Room 8 how to use GarageBand. She has been showing them how to use it to publish their stories and also to use it to practice reading and to listen to how they sound when they read.

My brother Whiti has shaved hair and he is deaf, he can't hear. He has
a rats tail and his eyes are brown.

My brother talks with his hands, it is called sign language. His
favourite game is X-box and he loves to go on the internet. Sometimes
he does the dishes and sometimes he cleans the house. He goes
to Kelston School and he loves going to Dominic's house.

My brother makes me feel angry sometimes and he makes me feel
happy sometimes. He likes to eat all the food and that makes me annoyed.
Sometimes he is kind.

My Baby Sister Madison

My baby sister Madison has a tiny rats tail and she has curly hair. She
has brown eyes like me.

My baby sister likes to laugh. She likes to get carried by mum. Madison
stays up at night and she cries. I like to play with my baby sister.

My sister Madison makes me feel happy when she talks to me. I love to cuddle
Madison, when I cuddle her she scratches me. She feels like a Teddy Bear.

My big brother Amos has dark hair and a ratstail. He has chubby
checks. He has a big smile.

Amos plays video games. He laughs at my faces. I like to play

My brother Amos makes me feel happy when he cuddles me. I like
him when he likes me. I love him back.

My Brother Zane

My brothers name is Zane and he is skinny. His skin is brown like
chocolate and has has brown eyes.

My brother likes to play basketball. He likes to shoot the ball
into the hoop. It is exciting.

My brother makes me feel happy when he plays 'Duck, Duck, Goose'
with me. I am proud of my brother when he comes and shows me his book.

Brooklyn Enjoys Visiting Mt Wellington

On Thursday Team 2 went to visit Mt Wellington. Mt Wellington was enormous. We got on a bus to ride there. We had to cross the road then we had morning tea. After morning tea we went to see the crater, the crater was big. We saw volcanic rocks. We saw big rocks and small rocks. After the crater we drew what we could see. After drawing we saw Rangitoto and One Tree Hill then we had one more thing from our lunch box. Then we went back to school. When we got back to school we had lunch, then we went to play.

The bus arrived. When we went Mt Wellington on the bus we saw Rangitoto. When we all looked out we saw lots of volcanoes and we saw a very big crater it had lots of rocks in the crater.

Room 8 Visits A Volcano!

Room 8 have been on a school trip to a real life volcano! We pretended that we were volcanologists and visited a volcano called Mt Wellington. Mt Wellington is one of the 50 volcanoes that are in Auckland, New Zealand.

We went by bus to the base of Mt Wellington and then we had to climb to the top. It was very steep. From the top we could see lots of other volcanoes around the Auckland area, like One Tree Hill and Rangitoto .

We walked around the crater and looked for scoria (volcanic rock).

While we were there we did lots of drawings of the crater and the volcanoes that we could see.

How Does A Volcano Work

Room 8 have been learning about how a volcano works.
We have drawn some pictures in Kidpix to show you how
a volcano works and erupts.

Room 8 Makes A Model Of The Earth

Room 8 makes a model of the earth out of playdough
to help them understand how the earth is made up of
layers.

How Are Volcanoes Made

To understand how volcanoes are made we need to know what the earth looks like from the inside.
Jordan has drawn this picture in Kidpix to help us understand what the earth looks like.



The outer layer of the earth is known as the crust.

Under the crust is an intensely hot layer of dense rock called the mantle.

Inside this mantle lies the core, which is made up of an outer layer of liquid metal and a dense inner core of solid metal alloys.

The core is really hot, hotter than anything you know, it can be as high as 5000oC.

Heating and cooling that occurs in the core causes the magma from the mantle to rise near the surface of the earth. When it does force its way to the surface, it can cause earthquakes and form volcanoes.

OUR QUESTIONS

Room 8 have lots of questions about Volcanoes that
they want to find out the answers to.



We will find out our answers though doing some research over
the next few weeks. Some of the ways we will find out our answers are:

* listening to the teacher
* reading books about volcanoes
* using google to search for our answers and images of volcanoes
* using youtube to watch how volcanoes erupt and work
* speaking to be people who know about volcanoes
* read and listen to other Pt England students blogs to see and hear what they are learning about volcanoes
* watching school TV
* conduct experiments to help us understand how volcanoes work
* draw, create an animation and make a model to hep us understand how volcanoes work

We are going to have lots of fun learning . Please read and watch our upcoming posts and maybe you will learn something new too.

I put my hand in the box and it was a gooey monster!
It was wobbly and wet. I pulled my hand out and it was jelly.

I put my hand hand in the big box. I was scared. I felt a creature.
It was gooey. I said to myself "I know what that is, it is jelly and sugar too".
When Miss Burne opened the box I was right and some people were wrong.

cold and it was wobbly. After that Miss Burne told us to look at
our hand. It was green jelly!

I put my hand in the box. I felt something. It felt slimey and it felt
wet and gooey. I moved my hand and there was white eyeballs and
Miss Burne said there was two balls in the box. I pulled my hand out
of the box and there was green jelly on my hands.

It felt like hair gel. My hand was green. It was jelly.

What Is In The Box Jordenne?

I put my hand in the box. It felt yuck! It was scary. It was
cold and wet. It felt like a creature. I pulled my hand out of
the box and it was slimey jelly.

Toma Takes A Guess At Whats In The Box

I put my brown hand into the white box. I felt a ball in the
white box. I felt a gooey monster and when it was hometime
Miss Burne opened the white box and we saw what it was. It
was jelly with two eyeballs.

What Did Jessica Feel?

I put my hand in the box. It felt Slimey. It felt like
jelly. When I pulled my hand out of the box.
It look like a jelly.

What did Brooklyn feel?

I put my hand in the box. It felt gross and slippery. I said "Oh".
Then I moved my hand around the box. I felt gunge, it smelt nice
like an apple. When I took my hand out of the box I knew it was Jelly
because it was green and wavy.

What's In The Box Room 8 ?

Room 8 children needed to be brave this week when they were asked
to reach into the unknown and put there hand into the box!
What did they feel? Read their writing to see what they felt and what
they thought it might be.

Jordan Would Like To Work On A Farm

At Ambury Farm the pig had a hairy back and the
piglets had a curly tail. The pig had a dusty back.
The piglets were greedy. Next we saw the sheep.
The sheep had soft wool. It nibbles the grass. After
the sheep we went to see the chickens. They had a
sharp beak and they bit my hand. Did you know
that a chicken lays one egg a day? I want to work
on a farm because I like the sheep.

At Ambury Farm the piglets squeal at us. But the
pig was big and it had floopy ears. After that we saw
Bella the horse. She and long legs and we brushed her
muscly body. Bella the horse is a tall horse.

Zion Likes The Animals At Ambury Farm

At Ambury Farm the pig had a hairy back. After that
we saw Bella the horse. She was tall. We brushed Bella's muscly body.
Next we saw the sheep. The sheep had curly wool. After the sheep
we went to see the chickens. They had soft feathers and lived in a paddock.
I like the animals at the farm.

Tevita Likes To Brush the Horse

At Ambury Farm the piglets had dusty backs. After that
we saw Bella the horse. She had a long tail and long legs.
Then we brushed her. I like brushing her tail. Next we saw
the sheep. The sheep were warm. After the sheep we went
to see the chickens. They had little chicks. They had sharp beaks.
I really like Ambury Farm because I like to brush the horse.

At Ambury Farm the piglets had a curly tail and a hairy back. The piglets were thirsty for the milk. The mother nearly feel on the baby piglets and the big pig fell down on the grass. After that we saw Bella the horse and she had a long nose and a muscly body. We brushed her body and we couldn’t reach her. Next we saw the sheep. It had a white face and curly wool. It had pink ears. After the sheep we went to see the chickens. Then we feb them and the chickens peaked my hand and it was sore The feathers were soft. The chickens had sharp claws and when the chickens came to me I threw the food on the grass before the chicken bit my hand. We saw one egg and we looked through the window. The chickens had sharp claws and when the chickens came to me I threw the food on the grass before the chicken bit my hand. We saw one egg and we looked through the window. I really like Ambury Farm. One day I want to take my Nan to see the chickens lay one egg a day.

Paula Likes Bella The Horse

At Ambury Farm the greedy pig had floppy ears and a curly tail.
After that we went to see Bella the horse. She had a long tail
and strong legs and a long nose. Next we saw the sheep. It had
a white face and pink ears. It had soft wool. After the sheep we went to
the chickens. The chicken had a sharp beak and small legs. At Ambury
Farm I liked the horse because it was big.

Maysun Describes Our Trip To The Farm

At Ambury Farm the pig had short legs and the piglets had beady eyes. After that we saw Bella the horse. She had a long nose and a muscly body. We brushed Bella and she had long legs and she had long, strong legs. Bella had long hair. Next we saw the sheep. The sheep had curly wool and the sheep had short legs. The sheep had pink ears. The sheep had white faces. After the sheep we went to see the chickens. They had sharp claws and the chickens had sharp beaks. The chickens were pecking. I patted the chickens and the chickens peaked my hand. The feathers feel soft.

Lizara Wants A Baby Piglet

At Ambury Farm the piglets had beady eyes and floopy ears.
The mother had milk in her. The pig had short stumpy legs
and it has a hairy back. After that we saw Bella the horse. She
had a long nose and a long tail. Bella had long legs. We brushed
the horse and she had hooves like dinner plates. Next we saw the
sheep. The sheep had pink ears. It had dirty hooves with white wool.
We fed the sheep and it tickled my hand. After the sheep we went
to see the chickens. They had soft feathers and when we fed the chickens the chickens bit me. The mother had lots of baby chickens. I really like Ambury Farm because I like the piglets and I wish I had a little baby piglet.

At Ambury Farm the piglets were little. They were
happy because they had a curly tail. After that we
went to see Bella the horse. She was tall and she
had long legs. Then we went to see the sheep. The
sheep had soft wool. Then we had to feed the sheep. It
was tickling. After the sheep we went to see the
chickens. Then we had to feed them. The chickens had
sharp beaks and soft feathers. when we fed the chicken
it had bit my finger and it had sharp claws.

At Ambury Farm the piglets had a pink snout and it came
up to us and it was happy. After that we went to the horse and
brushed her muscly body. After the sheep we went to see the
chickens. They had some eggs and some baby chicks.
I like Ambury Farm and one day I might take my brother.

went to see the chickens. Popcorn had soft feathers and it was white.
I fed Popcorn. I really like Ambury Farm because the piglets looked
cute and I wished I had one.

At Ambury Farm the greedy piglets were hungry.
After that we went to go to Bella the horse. She had
a bony back and a long tail. We went to see the sheep.

Team Two Went to A Farm!

As part of our Topic studies Room 8 and Team 2 went
to Ambury Farm to practice using the Pt England Way.
